INTRODUCTION

WHY ANOTHER MEDIEVAL SITE?

With powerful tools like ORB (aimed mostly at the college and graduate student) and the Labyrinth (aimed mostly at university faculty) already available on the Web, it might seem that there is little reason for proposing another medieval studies site. Useful as these sites are, however--and I use them constantly--the specifically pedagogical tools they contain aim predominantly at college and graduate programs, rather than elementary and secondary schools. That aim is perfectly understandable, butI cannot help thinking that many, perhaps even most, students make their only academic acquaintance with the culture of medieval Europe in school, rather than at college. As a secondary school member of the Board of TEAMS, I conceived of Medieval Studies in the Schools as providing, or giving links to, resources for the elementary schoolmedieval unit, the junior high medieval fair, the medieval section of an AP art history course, and similar projects; I'm pleased that MSS has become part of the TEAMS outreach to secondary, middle, and elementary schools.

Obviously, this site as you find it today is only a beginning; I invite teachers to contribute successful ideas, course descriptions, syllabi, and so on. Please e-mail me at: houghtonj@ehsbr.org
